A MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR DE FORCE

PROJECT BRIEF

The project consists of a publication design centered around the article "Magical Mystery Tour de Force," which delves into Jacques Tati's iconic 1967 film "Playtime" and its exploration of themes related to isolation and separation in society. The publication design evokes a sense of coldness and disconnection, mirroring the film's portrayal of a modern, fragmented urban environment. The design seeks to immerse readers in Tati's visionary world while prompting contemplation on the timeless relevance of "Playtime's" social commentary.

PROCESS

The technical design process for the publication began with several variations of typographical layout using unedited stills from the film.
There was an exploration of color palettes, focusing on icy blue and gray tones to evoke a sense of isolation and detachment as described in the article. Using Adobe Photoshop, images were manipulated with added noise, reflecting the uneasy fragmented nature of society depicted in "Playtime." White space is strategically utilized in typography to further emphasize themes of separation and emptiness. The final design was created using Adobe InDesign.
